Common Dental Emergencies Of Children And Their First Aid Steps

To help you in case of a dental emergency, we have listed some of the most common dental emergencies experienced by children, including the first aid steps. We hope that with the right knowledge, you can help your child before your visit to your Mayfield dentist.

Toothache

  • Remove all food debris in the mouth by brushing and flossing.
  • Let your child rinse with an antiseptic mouthwash or a saline solution.
  • Apply clove oil on the aching area to minimise pain. Never put aspirin as this could cause a chemical burn.
  • Apply cold compress against the area.
  • See your dentist immediately.

Knocked-out Tooth

  • Know if it is a permanent or a baby tooth.
  • Hold the tooth by the crown, never touch the root.
  • Clean the tooth with water but don’t scrub or scrape it.
  • For a permanent tooth, gently reinsert the tooth into its socket.
  • For a baby tooth, soak it in milk, saline solution, or saliva on your way to the dentist.
  • See your dentist within 30 minutes of the emergency.

Chipped or broken tooth

  • Rinse your child’s mouth with lukewarm water.
  • Locate and secure the tooth fragments and soak them in milk, saline solution, or saliva on your way to the dentist.
  • Apply pressure on the bleeding area using a clean absorbent cloth.
  • See your dentist within 30 minutes of the emergency.

Broken braces

  • Use the eraser end of a pencil eraser to move the offending wire into place.
  • Do this slowly to avoid breaking the wire.
  • Cover the ends in cotton or gauze on your way to the dentist.
  • See your dentist immediately.
