Knocked-Out Tooth
Even if you are not a sports-enthusiast, you can still suffer from a knocked-out tooth. A knocked-out tooth or an avulsed tooth is one of the most serious dental emergencies, which needs immediate attention.
First aid is not enough for this dental emergency. The chances of saving your tooth and your smile for the matter, depend on you and your dentist.
At Mayfield Dental Care we provide quick relief and immediate action to a knocked-out tooth. A same-day emergency appointment is available to solve your dental emergency as soon as possible.
Things To Remember
In case of a knocked-out tooth, it is very important to remain calm and focused. Your tooth’s chance for a re-implantation depends on the 30 minutes after the injury.
But being quick isn’t the end of it. Proper handling of the emergency is just as essential. A knocked-out permanent tooth is different from a knocked-out baby tooth. Most kids will have their full set of permanent teeth when they reach 12-13 years old. So be sure to know first if that is a permanent or a baby tooth.
First Aid Steps
For a knocked out permanent tooth, here’s what you can do:
- Locate and secure the tooth.
- Pick it up by the crown and do not touch the root.
- If the tooth is dirty, rinse it with clean water for no more than 10 seconds. Do not brush or scrape.
- Attempt re-implantation. Place the tooth back in place and bite down gently on a clean towel.
- Go to your dentist within 30 minutes of the injury.
For a knocked out baby tooth, here’s what you can do:
- Locate and secure the tooth.
- Pick it up by the crown and do not touch the root.
- If the tooth is dirty, rinse it with clean water for no more than 10 seconds. Do not brush or scrape.
- Do not attempt re-implantation as this could damage the developing permanent tooth below. Let your dentist handle the re-implantation.
- Soak the tooth in milk, saline solution or saliva on your way to the dentist.
- Go to your dentist within 30 minutes of the injury.

Re-implantation depends on the severity of the damage. Your dentist will explain each option to you.
In case of unsuccessful re-implantation, Mayfield Dental Care provides other options for restoring your teeth such as dental implants and dental bridges. Rest assured that your dentist will open all the available options o you.
